As always, there are plenty of great mobile technology pieces from which to choose. Here are my choices for this week. I’ve also included a more general article by Nathan Myhrvold that deserves everyone's attention.
J. Angel Racoma, China’s Alibaba Wants To Take on Android, Should Google Be Worried? (Android Authority Sept. 10, 2012).
Forrester predicts that there will be 1 billion smartphones worldwide by 2015. Now suppose (correctly) that China, with 1 billion people today, has relatively little smartphone penetration at the moment. Google is mostly “absent” in China, so Android, while present, does not enjoy an overwhelmingly dominant position in the operating system market. What then?
According to Racoma, “[l]ocal e-commerce company Alibaba wants to eventually dominate the market with its own Aliyun OS,” a Linux-based operating system. Alibaba Chief Strategy Officer Zeng Ming foresees that “the number of smartphones makers using Aliyun will rise from two manufacturers to five by the end of 2012. He states confidently: Alibaba wants to be
as strong as Android in China.
That would be no small feat.
